Events

Southern is famous for the natural scenery and friendly people, especially, it mostly attracts tourists in the cultural festivals which play an important role in the spiritual life of Vietnamese. In the article, we have listed some of the typical festivals over the year.

  1. National holidays:

New Year’s Day, Lunar New Year (Lunar calender), Thế Hùng Kings’ Temple Festival (Death Anniversary of the Hùng Kings) (10th March in Lunar calender), Independence Day (2nd Sep), Labour Đây (1st May), Liberate the South Day (30th April), Mid-Autumn Festival (14th and 15th August in Lunar calender)

  1. Southern Festival:

+ Ba Chua Xu Festival (Holy Mother of the Realm Festival): from night 23rd April to 27th April lunar calendar.

It is a religious festival attracted a great number of Buddhists over the country to worship and pray for fortune in An Giang Province. The festival consists of two parts. Firstly, the ceremony consists of four main ceremonies at the temple. Secondly, the festival has exciting cultural activities such as dragon dancing and others.

+ Bullfighting festival: It takes place from 29th August to 2nd September in Tri Ton district, An Giang province. This festival is a kind of cultural identity of Khmer ethnic group. The annual exciting game is bullfighting festival attracted thousands of visitors.

+ Ok Om Bok festival: in mid-October of the lunar calendar.

It is recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage. The festival aims to express a sincere gratitude to the Moon God.

During the festival, many ritual offerings are held at home and at the temple. The offerings of the Moon are usually agricultural products such as banana, coconut, sweet potato, cassava, orange, tangerine,etc , to pray for a good business year and the new favorable season. Ok Om Bok festival also attracts visitors by traditional activities as boat race or folk games.

  1. Cholchnam Thmay festival: It is the traditional day of the Khmer people and was held in mid-April during 3 days. Like Lunar New Year, people will clean up and decorate the houses, they also prepare a variety of food, fruit cake. Besides, children are usually bought for new clothes.

During the Chol Chnam Thmey festival, people often visit each other but the main activities are still taking place at the temple.
