Halong Bay is part of the Gulf of Tonkin, where the weather has four seasons. Winter (November to March) was very cold and the summer (April to October) is very hot.

You can visit Ha Long Bay all year round. But there are some moments in year with bad weather will affect the visibility and can even spoil your trip.

The best time to visit Ha Long Bay starts is from March to June. October and November is also the high season. There is so many storms from June to September. December is cool, cloudy and dry. January and February are cold, foggy and drizzly. Avoid some public holidays because it will be very crowded.

How to travel to Ha Long Bay?

By bus: from My Dinh bus station to Bay Chay for 100.000 vnd.

By open bus: $15 one way, pick up & drop off at Bus Station.

By shuttle bus: Pick up & drop off passengers in the Ha Noi old quarter about US$10 each way.

By Train: take cargo train from Hanoi to Yen Vien (Gia Lam) and then to Quang Ninh. The terminal at Ha Long City is near the Bai Chay bus station and about 5 km away from the harbor. $10 USD one way.

By private car or taxi: $85 – 100$ depend.

By Seaplane: Take a seaplane flight from Noibai to Halong for only 45 minutes.

Ha Long Bay cruises mostly run out of Hanoi or the coastal town of Halong City. There are hundreds of agencies selling tours on the bay with different price.  So try to talk to other travellers and shop around, you will have the best price.


Seafood in Ha Long is very fresh and tasty. There are so many restaurants and coffee shops on seafront and Ha Long road that very easy to find.
